Eleven staff at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora sent to hospital

Eleven staff members from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora were sent to the hospital on Friday. They were exposed to a toxic substance believed to be fentanyl, a highly dangerous opioid.

The exposure happened in the prison’s mailroom Friday morning. Staff were inspecting mail addressed to prisoners at Clinton Correctional Facility. That’s when they found an envelope with a substance the staff was not able to identify.

State Police responded around 9 a.m. Friday. According to police, several mailroom staff felt physical symptoms from the exposure.

In all, eleven prison employees were treated at the hospital in Plattsburgh and released the same day.
