Kyle Gilg, a deputy in the Jail Division of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, was recently presented with an achievement award for his actions assisting an inmate who was in distress.

The incident occurred about 8:05 p.m. Aug. 3. Deputies heard an inmate calling for help in “E Block,” a female housing area of the jail. Deputies entered the block where they found an inmate that appeared to be choking. The deputies were advised by other inmates that the inmate in trouble was in fact choking on a piece of food.

Deputies began lifesaving measures by attempting the Heimlich maneuver on the inmate while calling a “Code Blue” over the facility radio, which is a call for emergency medical assistance for an inmate. In response to the call for assistance Gilg entered the housing unit and took over for deputies on scene. With a couple of thrusts, Gilg was able to use the Heimlich to dislodge the obstruction in the inmate’s airway. Within a short time the inmate had normal respiration.
