LUDLOW - An inmate at the Hampden County House of Correction has been charged with possession of Suboxone with intent to distribute after a full body scanner revealed the drugs were being kept inside his body.

Officers scanned the inmate on Feb. 12 after a routine search of his cell revealed wrappers used to package the drug, Steve O'Neil, spokesman for the Hampden Country Sheriff's Department, said.

The 19 strips of Suboxone have an institutional value of $100 per strip, for a total value of $1,900, O'Neil said.

Sheriff Nick Cocchi last year authorized the purchase of two scanners, similar to the ones used at airports, and they have been in use for several months now.
